Individuals must specifically know to opt out; otherwise, their DNA is sold to the pharmaceutical company for research, product development, and huge profit. And guess what? As always, the American patient and/or health insurer pays exorbitant amounts for the medications that result. Why is this being sensationalized? Consenting adults agreed to this... gene targeted therapies were always going to happen... are we really going to go all “big brother” about improving medical science? You sign a waiver when using 23andMe that ask for your to give them permission to use your dna for further research. You don’t have to sign the waiver. And once you get your results they discard properly. People freely give up their privacy by just being on social media 🤣🤣🤣. I did the 123andme with health and consented. My Grandmother passed away from Parkinson’s and if I have the gene and if Big Pharma can find a cure from my DNA, then I am excited and could care less who benefits and who paid for the kit. I have nothing to hide because I have led a good clean life. Privacy is dead. We are not allowed to own our own financial and medical information. And now we will not own our genetic information. And it will all be used against us. After gene testers or Big Pharma gets our data, they can sell it to insurance companies, who can use it to DENY us coverage for medical or life insurance. More fun in data sales! And we get nothing for our data. Nothing. If it were used for ONLY that purpose I wouldn’t mind. I believe it can be a Catch 22 with Insurance Companies. And I don’t believe the medicine will be the only thing they will use if for, sadly.

Don't all of us know that "with consent only" applies only until someone makes a mistake and opens up the file system? I would NOT trust this at all. I participated in 23 and me. You can choose to participate or opt out. I am currently under treatment for cancer. Mine has a definite genetic link. Drug companies are trying to create drugs that work specifically for certain cancers. The cure for cancer is a combination of surgery, radiation ( sometimes ) and chemo drugs. The only eradication would be genetic modification and DNA selection- both of which humans are playing GOD with doing and is cost prohibitive. It seems as though people LOVE to complain. I am honored to be able to contribute my data so others may benefit. I didn’t bring children into this world- my defective DNA stops with me. I will be the first one to change my stance on something if I am proven wrong. I don't get upset about it, I don't complain about it, I don't tryto obfuscate the fact that I am wrong and will not admit it. I simply accept it, and move on. To not accept a fact. To not accept that you are wrong. To not accept that what you believe is wrong, when shown that it is..is insanity. Sorry, this comment is probably gonna be long but I do eventually make a point. body modifications are easily spotted in an Autopsy, the Coroner would be able to make assumptions about the cause of such, but ultimately, the DNA gives away the most clues.
