Shutting the pump off does nothing for the gas on the ground near the pump and the vapors above it, which will ignite and then liquid gas ignites and lights the hose and then the entire station. Stop being a keyboard warrior, go outside....you use the front or back door if you don't know where the exit from your dungeon is. Fill a soup can with 200ml of gasoline. Light a smoke or a match and toss it in. The world won't end and your life is not in danger as most of you would think. The gasoline will light on fire, it's not fucking hard to imagine a flammable substance burning. As for the vapors it has to be the proper fuel to air mixture which you will not find outside unless the truck is there filling the tanks. Reason being is when the truck is filling the tanks it's displacing all the vapors in the tanks with liquid. Check by the curb at any gas stations for tall silver poles. Those are the vapor vent lines that come from the tank. You smoke near there while the truck is filling you're fucked. There have only been two deaths related to vapors igniting from a static spark, which is a lot less likely to happen than from a lit cigarette.

Well, there are also these things called "LAWS", and wherever I have bought gas for a vehicle, there's been a little sign saying that it's state law that you NOT SMOKE WHILE PUMPING GAS. It is also so volatile that if you see liquid gasoline you can be certain that there is evaporated gasoline in immediate proximity of the liquid. The fluid is not burning, it is the vapor that is just a fraction of a millimeter above the gas fuel or fluid. Once again, for the people who don't understand science:
