This was not a situation of "using your father's influence" -- it is a process to find an educated, well-versed, experienced, public figure. UVU has worked to have diverse speakers over the years: John Quiñones - News Anchor; Mitt Romney - Presidential Candidate; Wes Moore - Author and Veteran; Anuosheh Ansari - Astronaut/Entrepreneur; Erin Gruwell - Author, "Freedom Writers", etc. Please send your nominations for next year so they can be reviewed through the process the same way they have every other year. 😂😂😂😂😂 get over yourself, Stephanie Flack. I'm non-Mormon, atheist, and a UVU student and I think it's great. "Henry B Eyring received a BS degree in physics from the University of Utah. He went on to earn both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, before embarking on a career in academia.Eyring was an associate professor of business at the Stanford Graduate School of Business from 1962 to 1971.[5] He was also a Sloan Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology." Is this not enough for you? Deborah Brown if you're offended by that, you should reevaluate your sensitivities. If you believe that religious leaders should be barred form speaking at commencement - then your reasoning should be applied across the board. There should be NO speakers at commencement because there will always be individuals whose personal beliefs/ideals/ideologies/perspectives differ with the speaker. What you are demonstrating is intolerance.

What is most amazing here is the hypocrisy of everyone opposing the speaker. Pure hypocrisy. You call for diversity and inclusion - yet you completely reject a Mormon religious speaker.
Those who demand diversity scream the loudest for absolute conformity! - diversity, according to their own world-view. He hasn't taught<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->Fortnite Just Play It T Shirt since 1971. A great deal in academia has changed since then. I'd be more excited if he had more up to date creds other than church stuff. Maybe Kenye West or Lady Gaga would be better? Maybe some attorney from some place should do it. Is there any pleasing people? Maybe George Soros or Anthony Weiner or Ghandi...no wait, he's religious? This is all very confusing. It's like UVU wants educated people to speak to their graduates. What the hell is up with that? So you believe religious people can't offer anything other than religion? Are you judging a man for his dedication to his church that he can't have any other value to offer<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->Two Seater Shirt? What you are saying is you can't listen to people who do not share the same values of you, regardless of the topic they are discussing. IF you knew anything about this man, you would how EDUCATED he is... which is what he is going to speak about. So you believe religious people can't offer anything other than religion? I find it hard to fathom that you think President Holland needs to "use his father's influence" for anything. Yes he has a wonderful and influential father, but last time I checked, President Holland (the son) is the president of the largest university in Utah, so pretty sure he has established his own influence and connections by his own merit at his point. Just saying. Such an excellent mentor of career and education. Spent his whole life teaching. Excellent speaker. I am impressed.

Best book I ever read was his biography. I think that any time you choose a prominent religious figure of the majority religion in the area for a speaking engagement such as this, people are going to be upset.

As a non-member student, it feels like I can't get away from references to the church at UVU; good and bad. In and out of class. My questions are:
1. How much, if any, is he being paid to speak?
2. Are his academic credentials enough to merit speaking at commencement?
3. Would we be upset if a member of another religious organization was speaking? (Pope, Dalai Lama)
For me, if he's being paid, I'm against it. If he wasn't selected solely from his academic credentials, I'm againstit. Lastly, I would be disappointed if any religious leader spoke at my commencement. That's just me.
I would say that it would better for UVU students to be exposed to more diversity in the commencement address.
I'm so excited to hear President Eyring (PhD)! 😊👍🏻 I'm excited to know what counsel and advice that will give to help me in my professional and personal life. Thank you UVU for inviting him to speak! I'm sad that because he's labeled as a mormon leader, those who are not mormon feel they have to shut their ears to him, and say they refuse to go to their own commencement. UVU does embrace diversity, and I'm sure they are open to suggestions for future graduation ceremony speakers if you would want to recommend some.. other than you stating you won't go.. it doesn't hurt anyone but yourself with that kind of thinking and exclusion.
You won't know what the man has to say until he opens his mouth... if you do decide to go, you might leave understanding more. The choice is always up to you, but don't close your mind because he's "Mormon".

I would hope that with those that are non members, the many years at UVU has shown that not all LDS people are bad, and that your education there has been money well spent. Please people, you'd have the same "angry" reactions had it been a speaker from a Satanic Church. Many people defend the chosen speaker for his previous and now abandoned academic history. Being educated myself, speaking 9 languages, capable of dismantling the most secure of digital things... I can say for a fact: if you cease use of knowledge long enough, you cease to possess<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->Bbq Becky Shirt. Now, 40 years after abandoning his academic achievements he's entirely lost that knowledge.
