My father immigrated to Australia over 50 years ago from Belgium, he wanted to be an Aussie , he wanted the opportunity for a good future and embraced the lifestyle and culture, became a naturalised citizen after 20 years, worked hard, learnt English from the day he arrived and you couldn’t meet a more Australian immigrant - he didn’t try to replicate or impose his culture in Australia - now we enclaves of different cultures not willing to integrate, learn the language and expecting our culture to change into their culture. Something needs to change! See people like us are lucky our looks fitted in but surely you can remember those that didn't back in the day were targeted , nothing much has really changed. Well said. I grew up with many immigrants from all over the world, and yes they were all like your dad. They were the hardest workers you’ll ever find. They worked to make a fantastic life for their families in their new country. I don’t think Australians are against immigration just against the attitude and violence some of them now bring with them. Michelle Harms if the person is good living, has good values ,is honest and hard working no one takes notice of what colour they are . I was brought up with Italians , Greeks , German , Dutch , Chinese etc . All were great people that came here to make a new and good life ,and they did .

My growing up years were some of the best with some of the nicest people you could meet from most races . Sadly some coming now are entirely different and want to live like the place they ran from ,Why ?? Your dad is an Aussie now. And everyone like him should be here because you need to love the country to want to be a part of it. My Father was exactly the same.
He came out from Holland after WW2
Taught himself English on the Ship which back then was a journey which took a very long time compared to today.
So he arrived with his Family who could all speak some English by then full of hope & appreciation.
He worked hard & just wanted to fit in with Australian culture.
His first Wife died so after a few years he married an Aussie girl (my Mother) & then I came along.
I grew up just like any other Aussie kid more or less.
I was occasionally reminded I was a Wog by some of the Aussie kids down the road.
Nevertheless I always considered myself Aussie.
Stories like ours remind all of us that not all immigrants are the same.
Our parents appreciated the opportunity’s coming to Australia gave them & worked hard in return.

Fitted in the best they could as it was the right thing to do.
But some we see coming in these days are so far removed from our parents & instead want to bring in their laws, rules & traditions.
Some don’t even like us.
So I wonder why are they here? My dad and mum escaped Hungary in 1952...one suit case and no money. No handouts just plain hard work and determination. Learnt the language, found jobs and integrated. That's how it should be done. Fit in and work hard! Patricia Sutton That is the problem some of the people with rose coloured glasses are missing I am a migrant also You have to fit into the way and values or Australia Not try and destroy it and change it .If anyone complains we are all labeled fascists. In fact most have worked or gone to school with most nationalities .
