I don’t understand how people can’t or won’t make their animals a PRIORITY on a crazy holiday like this. I have missed every 4th for the last 7 years because my Morkie is absolutely terrified and we now have a 2 year old Doberman that is also terrified. They are both on meds and sitting in my lap shaking. The 4th has always been my favorite holiday but not anymore, especially since people are no longer happy with the safe and sane fireworks and have to have all the illegal bombs bursting in air! I wonder if this is happening bc families want to take off to see the fireworks, so figure better to leave their pets outside than deal with potty accidents in the house? Personally, we would ALWAYS rather have a few messes to clean up rather than risk a pet running anyway when left outside for long times for ANY reason, but not all pet owners think about how easy it is for pets to escape, especially when the pet is scared. I agree with Trish. People are getting more irresponsible and stupid by the year. Sorry, but when you have a pet, just as a child, you DO think ahead. I’m sorry... but I really don’t get as to why these things keeps on happening! Whether it’s the 4th or just any ordinary days, dogs getting out of their properties! We have to take responsibilities on securing our pets and keep them safe! I just saw a photo this morning of a dog hit by a car. Same thing. Scared by fireworks. It looks as though she will make it. I agree, how can people not be aware of the dangers? Since I moved into a local (small) town that has their own fireworks, every year, this night has become a good night for just thing: STAYING HOME with my pets!

Other Tips if you live within earshot of a fireworks display:
-- Close the windows and run your air or fans.
-- Play soothing music to help muffle the<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->Charlie Brown Supreme Shirt.
-- Behave as normally as possible, but be ready to comfort them.
-- Double-check all exits (windows and doors) early. Pets become escape artists at times like this.
-- Take dogs out early and keep them on a leash.
-- Allow for a little extra hiding, if that helps them. My cats start climbing into the weirdest places and I normally chase them out... but not tonight.
And, too, keep them in until all the traffic dies down. Once the show is over there may be an unusually high amount of cars on the road, all leaving the event area at once. There's a calming pheromone called Feliway. It's probably made in the U.S. That might help keep them calm ..... but still indoors. Thanks, Linda, but drugs aren't my first choice with my kiddos. And, too, most sedatives for animals must be administered by a vet. So that's not an option for most people here. Marige O'Brien a pheromone is not a drug. Feliway is just a synthetic Taylor Swift Cat Shirt of a cat's own happy/calm secretions from the glands above their eyes where they rub on things. You say potay-toe, I say potAto. I consider artificial anything to be a drug as it is not naturally occurring. It artificially alters the body's chemistry.
The trouble is, because they are not naturally occurring, the body's normal responses are not always able to handle them. That's what causes side-effects: The body responding to sudden changes in its chemistry. Many of those responses are adverse. For extreme cases it may be worth it. But I wouldn't recommend any drug, carte blanche. My sweet pittie, Fergie, gets terrified and hides in the shower stall. OTC meds (like Benadryl) and herbals aren't very effective on the 4th; so this year I got her a sedative. Gotta LOVE a happy ending!! <3 <3 <3 Everyone, PLEASE keep your pets INSIDE when there are fireworks going on! They'll be much safer and happier! I hate fireworks especially because they are right down the street from us. I feel sorry for the birds, squirrels, all wildlife at the pond.
