Timothy Mahon im not doubting MJ as a defender I’m saying that you have to look at the fact that the players MJ had to guard every night were nowhere near the skill level, athleticism of ability kobe did. In the era Michael played his biggest rivalries came against players like Joe Dumars, isiah Thomas, John Stockton , John starks , Byron Russell etc. when you compare that to the players in kobe’s era and the difference in size, athleticism and ability it is not even close. Michael was the best athlete in the entire NBA by a mile, he was almost always bigger longer and more athletic than every player he was defending. Kobe had to guard TMac, iverson, Lebron etc. MJ was so ahead of his era in terms of athleticism and skill at his size. Then in Kobe’s era you had the emergence of players like Kevin Garnett and Tracy mcgrady. The league had never seen players at their position and size with the all’s around Skills they had. Kobe guarding TMac is much harder than MJ guarding John starks. You have to be realistic not nostalgic, I still think MJ is the greatest but if your looking at skill level and particularly defensively Kobe was a far more skilled ball handler and passer, his 3 point shooting was miles better and he was a much better defender guarding players in a league that was much more athletic with bigger and more skilled players than had ever played in MJ era, that’s just a fact. The guards Kobe faced, T Mac, Vince Carter, a young Ray Allen, Iverson, amongst others is something Jordan didn’t face CONSISTENTLY. Penny Hardaway was probably the closest and only guard that matched the athleticism and talent of guards Kobe faced, and that team with Penny and Shaq knocked the Jordan led Bulls out the playoffs, in the first round, if memory serves me correct. Jordan is the goat but Kobe skill wise could do more and do it better.. MJ Is the GOAT, he is a great defender predominantly through hands, deflections and steals. Huge hands and quickness. Steals is part of defence but its also hugely misleading in terms of saying who is a better defender. You have to look at straight up on ball plays and locking down your man, not just playing the passing lanes for steals. Bruce bowen is considered one of the all time lock down defenders ever!! and yet hes not even in the top 25 in steals, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley and Kevin Garnett all have more steals. Kobe is bigger, stronger, longer and defends bigger players in the post as well as some of the toughest players to guard ever !!! on the perimeter.
